Sierra Nevada Region Projects and Awards Programs Snapshot

SNR FELLOWSHIPS
Fellowships and grants-in-aid are awarded annually to outstanding women students working for doctoral degrees. Applicants must be a citizen of a country represented by Soroptimist International of the Americas and enrolled in a college or university located within the boundaries of the Sierra Nevada Region.

VIOLET RICHARDSON AWARD
This award is to recognize and honor young women between the ages of 14 and 17 for volunteer action in their community or school. The program begins at the local club level. Club level winners then become eligible for a $1,000 Region level award. In addition, $1,000 will be contributed in honor of the winner to their volunteer organization. The Region winner will eligible for an additional $2,500 award, including a contribution of $2,500 to the finalist’s volunteer organization

WOMEN’S OPPORTUNITY AWARD
Women’s Opportunity Awards aid mature women who must enter or return to the job market in order to support themselves and their family. These women need additional skills, training and education to upgrade their employment status. Candidates should be heads of households completing undergraduate programs or entering vocational or technical training programs. Competition begins at the club level, with local awards set by the participating clubs. Club recipients are judged through the SNR Women’s Opportunity Award Advisor. They are selected to receive the region awards, one $5000 award and two $3000 awards. 

RUBY AWARD: FOR WOMEN HELPING WOMEN
Women who are improving the lives of other women or girls through their professional or personal activities are eligible for the Soroptimist Ruby Award. These women have identified and focused on a need in their communities, which has significantly contributed to the improvement of women and girls’ lives.

REGION ADOPTED PROJECTS
The Sierra Nevada Region occasionally adopts a Region wide initiative. Past projects include:

Poco's Panties for H.E.A.R.T - The Health Education Africa Resource Team (H.E.A.R.T) asked for the help of Soroptimists in the Sierra Nevada Region to collect panties for girls in Kenya. SNR collected 12,900 pairs then raised the money on the spot to ship them to Kenya. The girls that received the panties along with sanitary napkins will be able to stay in school full time.

Camp Ronald McDonald at Eagle Lake - SNR worked with the U.S. Forest Service to secure building plans and solicited monetary donations and the donation of construction materials and labor to build an outdoor stage/amphithieater complete with costumes, storage rooms, lighting and sound. The project raised $50,000.

Adopt a Lindmine Field - SNR raised 42,000 to clear two landmine fields in Cerovac, Trebinje, Republicka Sroska, Bosnia-Herzegovina were cleared of mines
